Charlotte Signage : December 9, 2011

Here are some images I took today of some venerable local establishments. I like the paint-on-block simplicity of some of it. Also like the weathered look and the soft patina of the metal on the 'Price's' sign, etc. And of course, the neon.

Sahlen's Griling Rig in Matthews, NC : 12/8/11

Our primary hot dog and sausage vendor, Sahlen's (Buffalo, NY) has been trying to create support and distribution for their clients here in Charlotte for the past two years. They tote this rig to events around town, hand out coupons for area restaurants serving their products and, in this case, sell hot dogs on corner of Trade St. and West Matthews St. near downtown Matthews.

I was there picking up samples of product. They also have branded gear and accessories, (umbrellas, branded napkins, that sort of thing) that might make sense to integrate into JJ's where sensible. They have been great to work with so far, and during construction, I'm going to have them set up the rig in the parking lot to feed the tradesmen on the job. -JL

East Boulevard Walk Through 12.6.11

Turns out the old adage still applies regarding "location." This spot is on East Boulevard in Charlotte and is in the middle of Dilworth, a very nice old neighborhood with lots of families, professionals and tradesman - the heart of our customer base. And as you can see, it has "good bones." It was built in 1947 and was originally called "The Drum." (note the circular fence on the roof. That was the original outline of the building, which was actually shaped like a drum) Some of the original structure still exists inside the restaurant as well. We plan on bringing out some of that history in the design.

First Logos from Matt Stevens. 10.18.11

Matt Stevens is a brilliantly talented illustrator and designer. I can't really remember when I first heard about him, but the moment I saw his work, I knew I wanted to work with him. And the work speaks for itself. We are lucky to have him as part of this project.

We didn't stray too far from his original ideas. He had two very strong ones from the jump...and we essentially just mashed the two together. The result is what is on the home page of this blog.

Beyond the logo and brand ID stuff, I wanted Matt to become part of the overall concept design team. I am really looking forward to see what he comes up with for signage, menu boards, apparel, etc.
